Science and the soul

Sad to say, my sister’s lovely cat, Escher is dying. This unfortunate event has prompted a bit of a discussion about death amongst us. A friend of my sister had this to say about death:

Our understanding of thermodynamics says that matter and energy are inseparable, and that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. There is a fixed amount of it in the universe. This is the first law of thermodynamics and it’s one of the most sacred truths we own. If there is a soul, do you think it has anything to do with this energy? I know this is cold comfort to most people but it works for me.

So what does this mean? An argument that supports the idea of reincarnation or does this energy disperse–entropy? Hmmm, Honestly–I’m not even going to pretend I know what I’m talking about on this one. Comments, opinions welcomed.
